Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Bars

Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Bars are basically what I want when I can’t decide between a peanut butter cookie and something rich and chocolatey. They’re soft, a little chewy, and sturdy enough to slice cleanly for sharing.

This version has a buttery peanut butter base with plenty of semisweet chocolate chips, so the flavor is classic and familiar in the best way. I like that they stay tender for days, which makes them one of my go-to make-ahead dessert bars.

For me, these are especially good for cookie trays, bake sales, potlucks, or anytime you want an easy peanut butter dessert that doesn’t require frosting. A little flaky salt on top is optional, but I think it’s worth it.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Soft and Chewy: The centers stay tender, with just enough structure around the edges so they slice into neat bars.

Big Peanut Butter Flavor: These taste like peanut butter blondies in bar form, with that buttery cookie base I always want in a dessert bar.

No Fuss Dessert: It’s a simple, straightforward bake with basic pantry ingredients, and it’s easy to feed a group.

Chocolate in Every Bite: The semisweet chips melt into the batter and give you that classic peanut butter + chocolate combo.

Easy to Customize: You can swap chips, add peanuts on top, or finish with flaky salt depending on who you’re serving.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Bar Batter

  • Unsalted butter: I like using softened butter (not melted) so the batter creams up fluffy and bakes into a softer, thicker bar.
  • Creamy peanut butter: Regular creamy peanut butter works best here. Natural peanut butter can work too, but only if it’s very well stirred and not super oily.
  • Light brown sugar: This is where a lot of the chewiness comes from. Dark brown sugar works too if that’s what you have.
  • Granulated sugar: Helps the bars bake up with a little more structure and gives the edges a slight crisp.

  • Eggs: Use large eggs. They bind everything together and keep the texture more bar-like than crumbly.
  • Vanilla extract: Don’t skip it. It rounds out the peanut butter and makes the batter taste more like a cookie.
  • All-purpose flour: I use regular flour here. Measure it the usual way you do, but don’t pack it down.
  • Baking soda: Gives the bars a little lift so they don’t bake up dense and heavy.
  • Fine salt: Peanut butter desserts need salt. Fine salt mixes in evenly so you don’t get salty pockets.
  • Semisweet chocolate chips: Semisweet is my go-to here. Dark chocolate chips are great too, and you can swap in some peanut butter chips if you want.

Optional Topping

  • Chopped peanuts: Adds crunch and a little extra roasted peanut flavor. I keep the pieces fairly small so they stick and slice cleanly.

  • Flaky sea salt: A light sprinkle on top is really nice, especially if you’re using semisweet or dark chocolate.

Recipe Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Heat the oven to 350°F. Line a 9×13-inch pan with parchment paper and lightly grease it.
  2. Beat the butter and peanut butter: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter, peanut butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  3. Add the eggs and vanilla: Beat in the eggs, then mix in the vanilla until everything is combined.
  4. Mix the dry ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk the flour, baking soda, and fine salt together.
  5. Add the dry ingredients: Mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients just until you no longer see dry flour. Don’t keep mixing once it comes together.
  6. Fold in the chocolate chips: Stir in the chocolate chips, then spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan. If using, sprinkle chopped peanuts over the top and add a light sprinkle of flaky salt.

  7. Bake: Bake for 22 to 28 minutes, until the edges are set and lightly golden and the center is just set.
  8. Cool and slice: Cool completely in the pan, then lift out using the parchment and slice into bars.

Some of my tips!

This is the part that really makes a difference. If you only read one section, make it this one because this is where I share the little trick that helps the recipe turn out so well.

Recipe Tips & Tricks

Don’t overbake the center. Pull the pan when the edges look set and the middle doesn’t look wet anymore. The bars finish setting as they cool, and that’s what keeps them soft.

Use a metal pan if you can. Glass pans can run a little hotter and take longer, and it’s easier to overdo the edges. If glass is what you have, just start checking a couple minutes early.

Spread the batter evenly. The batter is thick, so I usually press it out with a spatula and then smooth it with the back of a spoon. Even thickness helps everything bake at the same pace.

Try a chip swap. Replacing about half the chocolate chips with peanut butter chips is really good here. Dark chocolate also works if you like a deeper chocolate flavor.

Use natural peanut butter carefully. If your natural peanut butter is very oily, the bars can bake up a little greasy. If you use it, make sure it’s well stirred and not separated.

Make some touches!

There are plenty of easy ways to serve this depending on the occasion. Keep it simple, or add a few small touches to make it feel a little more special.

Serving Suggestions

  • Milk: A cold glass of milk is simple and classic with peanut butter chocolate chip bars. It’s especially nice if you did the flaky salt on top.
  • Coffee: These are really good with coffee, especially something not too sweet like black coffee or a plain latte.
  • Ice cream: Serve a bar with vanilla ice cream on the side if you want a full dessert plate. I like a quick drizzle of chocolate sauce too.
  • Fruit: Strawberries, raspberries, or sliced bananas are nice alongside the bars. It keeps the plate from feeling too heavy.

Save it for later

This section covers how to store leftovers and what parts of the recipe you can prepare ahead of time.

Storage and Make Ahead

Store the bars airtight at room temperature for up to 5 days. I usually keep them in a container with a tight lid so they stay soft. If your kitchen is very warm, you can refrigerate them, but they’ll firm up.

If you make them ahead, let the bars cool completely before slicing and packing them up. They cut cleaner once they’ve fully set.

If you want them to last longer, freeze sliced bars in an airtight container for up to 2 months. I like to separate layers with parchment so they don’t stick together.

Thaw at room temperature for an hour or two, or thaw in the fridge overnight. If you want that just-baked softness, a short microwave warm-up works well.

A few quick answers

Recipe FAQs

How do I know when peanut butter chocolate chip bars are done?

Look for set, lightly golden edges and a center that’s just set (not jiggly or shiny-wet). If you wait until the center looks totally firm, they usually end up drier after cooling.

Can I bake these in a 9×9-inch pan for thicker bars?

Yes. Use a 9×9-inch pan for thicker bars and bake about 28 to 35 minutes, checking early and watching the center. The top should look set, and the edges should be lightly golden.

Can I use dark chocolate chips or peanut butter chips?

Definitely. Dark chocolate chips work great if you like a less sweet chocolate flavor, and swapping in some peanut butter chips is also really good. I usually keep at least some semisweet chocolate for that classic taste.

Can I use natural peanut butter?

You can, but it’s a little more finicky. It works best if it’s well stirred and not overly oily or separated; very oily natural peanut butter can make the bars greasy and a bit heavy.
