Oreo Truffles

I have an absolutely delicious recipe for Oreo truffles that you won’t be able to resist. These little bites of heaven are incredibly simple to make but pack a big punch in terms of flavor. All you need are some Oreo cookies, cream cheese, and dipping chocolate.

Oreo Truffles

First, crush the cookies into fine crumbs and mix them with softened cream cheese to form a dough. Roll the mixture into balls and chill them in the fridge. Finally, dip the chilled truffles in melted chocolate and let them set. The result? A rich and creamy truffle with the perfect balance of sweet and chocolatey goodness. Trust me, you won’t be able to stop at just one!

Ingredients Needed for This Recipe

  • Oreo Cookies: 1 package (14.3 oz or 45 cookies)
  • Cream Cheese: 1 cup (8 oz, 226 g, or 1 block), room temperature
  • Chocolate Chips or Melting Wafers: 2 ½ cups (437 g), good quality
  • Sprinkles: For decorating (optional)

Instructions for Making Oreo Truffles

  1. To begin, put the Oreos into a food processor and blend until they turn into fine crumbs. Then, add the cream cheese and blend again until the mixture becomes smooth. If you don’t have a food processor, you can crush the cookies in a ziplock bag and mix them with the cream cheese manually. Next, move the mixture into a bowl and cover it. Put the bowl in the refrigerator for approximately an hour.
  2. Cover a baking sheet with either parchment paper or wax paper. Remove the truffle mixture from the refrigerator. Use a cookie scoop with a diameter of 1 inch to shape the mixture into balls of the same size. Put the balls onto the prepared baking sheet and move it to the freezer for approximately 30 minutes, or until the balls become solid.
  3. To melt the chocolate, use a makeshift double boiler (consult notes for microwave instructions). Put the chocolate in a heat-proof glass bowl and place it over a pot of simmering water. Stir gently until the chocolate is fully melted.
  4. Take the truffles out of the freezer. Take a truffle and dip it in the melted chocolate, making sure to coat it evenly, using either dipping tools or two forks. Remove any excess chocolate by tapping it off on the side of the bowl, then place the truffle back on the tray. If you want to add sprinkles, do so immediately. Repeat these steps with the rest of the truffles.
  5. You can either eat the truffles right away or keep them in a sealed container in the refrigerator for a maximum of two weeks.

Tips for Perfecting the Recipe

Achieving the Right Consistency: The foundation of a great Oreo truffle lies in the texture of the mixture. Ensure your Oreos are finely crushed to a powder-like consistency, as larger chunks can lead to uneven truffles. A food processor can achieve this texture most effectively. Additionally, the cream cheese should be at room temperature to blend smoothly with the Oreo crumbs, creating a uniform mixture that’s easy to shape.

Selecting the Right Chocolate: The choice of chocolate for coating the truffles significantly affects their taste and appearance. Opt for high-quality chocolate, which melts more smoothly and adheres better to the truffles. Whether you prefer dark, milk, or white chocolate, quality is key. Melting wafers are also an excellent option for a glossy finish.

Melting Chocolate Properly: Properly melted chocolate is crucial for a smooth coating. Avoid overheating, as burnt chocolate has a bitter taste and a clumpy texture. Using a double boiler or microwaving in short bursts at 50% power while stirring frequently can prevent this. If the chocolate becomes too thick, a teaspoon of coconut oil can help thin it without affecting the flavor.

Chilling Is Key: Chilling the truffle mixture before shaping and again after forming the balls but before dipping in chocolate helps them maintain their shape and makes the chocolate coating process easier. The firmness of the chilled truffles ensures they don’t fall apart when dipped in the warm chocolate.

Decorating with Precision: Once dipped, decorate your truffles with sprinkles, crushed Oreos, or drizzles of contrasting chocolate before the coating sets. This not only adds to their visual appeal but also introduces textural contrasts that enhance the eating experience.

Serving Suggestions

Themed Decorations: Tailor the decorations of your truffles to match the theme of your event. Use colored sprinkles for birthdays, holidays, or sports team colors. For a more sophisticated look, gold or silver edible dust can add a touch of elegance.

Pairing with Beverages: These truffles pair wonderfully with a variety of beverages. Serve them with coffee or espresso to balance the sweetness, or with milk for a classic combination. For adults, a dessert wine or a liqueur that complements the chocolate can elevate the tasting experience.

Creative Presentations: Beyond traditional serving methods, consider presenting your truffles in mini cupcake liners, on lollipop sticks as truffle pops, or arranged in a decorative box for a gift. A tiered dessert stand can also showcase the truffles beautifully at a buffet or party setting.

Storage Tips

Refrigeration for Short-Term Storage: In an airtight container, Oreo truffles can be refrigerated for up to two weeks. This method is ideal for keeping them fresh while retaining their creamy texture. Ensure the container is sealed properly to prevent the truffles from absorbing any odors from the fridge.

Freezing for Long-Term Storage: For longer storage, freezing the truffles is effective. Place them in a single layer on a baking sheet to freeze individually, then transfer them to a freezer-safe container, separating layers with parchment paper. This method prevents the truffles from sticking together and allows you to enjoy them for up to three months.

Thawing Before Serving: When ready to serve frozen truffles, thaw them in the refrigerator overnight. This gradual thawing helps maintain their texture and prevents condensation from forming on the chocolate coating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use different types of Oreos? Yes, experimenting with different Oreo flavors can introduce a variety of tastes to your truffles. Just be mindful of the filling-to-cookie ratio, as it may vary with different flavors, potentially requiring slight adjustments to the amount of cream cheese used.

How can I make my truffles vegan? To make vegan Oreo truffles, use a plant-based cream cheese alternative and ensure your chocolate is dairy-free. Many Oreo varieties are vegan by default, but it’s always best to check the packaging for confirmation.

Why is my chocolate coating not smooth? If your chocolate coating is not smooth, it may be due to the chocolate not being properly tempered or melted. Ensure the chocolate is heated gently and stirred consistently for a smooth finish. Adding a small amount of coconut oil can also help achieve a smoother consistency.

Can I add flavors to my truffles? Absolutely! Incorporating flavors like peppermint extract, orange zest, or espresso powder into the Oreo mixture can add an exciting twist to your truffles. Start with a small amount and adjust to taste, ensuring the added liquid doesn’t make the mixture too soft to shape.

Notes

  • Make Ahead   &   Freezing Instructions: It is possible to prepare this recipe a day in advance. The formed balls can be refrigerated for up to 3 days before being covered in chocolate. The completed Oreo truffles can also be frozen for 2 to 3 months and should be thawed in the refrigerator overnight.
  •  Oreos: We have conducted experiments with regular, Golden, and Mint Creme Oreos to try out this recipe. The recipe is designed for 36 normal-sized Oreo cookies, so please avoid using Double-Stuf Oreos. Additionally, if you prefer, you can also use peanut butter-flavored Oreos, as they will produce good results.
  •  Cream Cheese: Opt for brick cream cheese instead of the spreadable variety found in a tub.
  •  Chocolate: To make the Oreo truffles look and taste the best, you should use 4-ounce (113g) “baking chocolate” bars that can be found in the baking aisle. I recommend Baker’s, Guittard, or Ghirardelli brands. You will need a total of 3 4-ounce (113g) bars for this recipe, which amounts to 12 ounces (339g). You have the option to use milk, semi-sweet, bittersweet, or white chocolate. Another alternative is to use chocolate melting wafers, such as Ghirardelli brand. While candy melts can also be used, they do not have the same taste as real chocolate. Do not use chocolate chips These stabilizers in the substances keep them from melting to the desired texture for coating.
  •  Oil: To make it easier to cover the Oreo balls, I mix a small quantity of oil with the chocolate, which helps to dilute it. Either vegetable oil or coconut oil can be used for this purpose.
  •  Coating/Melting Chocolate: You can find all my troubleshooting advice mentioned earlier in the post.
  •  Do Not Temper: I would not suggest tempering the chocolate for this particular recipe. Tempered chocolate is not suitable for refrigeration and since there is cream cheese in the filling, these truffles need to be stored in the refrigerator.
