INGREDIENTS

Sloppy Joe Chili Dog Filling

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small yellow onion diced
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp ground cumin
  • ¼ tsp cayenne pepper optional
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar optional
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste.

For Serving

  • 6 hamburger buns
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup diced white onion
  • dill pickle slices optional
  • extra yellow mustard for serving.

INSTRUCTIONS

Cook the Filling

  • Heat a large skillet over medium high heat and cook ground beef until browned
  • add onion and cook until softened
  • add garlic and cook briefly then drain excess fat
  • stir in ketchup tomato sauce tomato paste mustard Worcestershire brown sugar chili powder paprika cumin and cayenne
  • add beef broth and vinegar then bring to a gentle simmer
  • simmer uncovered until thick and spoonable then season with salt and pepper and adjust with a splash of broth if needed.

Assemble

  • Toast buns if desired
  • spoon filling onto bottom buns
  • top with mustard cheddar and diced onion then serve warm.

Notes

1. Use ground turkey or chicken and add 1 tbsp oil if lean; Simmer longer for thicker texture or add extra broth for looser filling; Make ahead and refrigerate up to 3 days then rewarm with a splash of water; Freeze filling up to 3 months; For stronger chili dog flavor add a pinch of celery salt and extra mustard
