INGREDIENTS

Sloppy Joe Filling

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion diced
  • 1 small green bell pepper diced optional
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 lb ground beef 85 to 90 percent lean
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp packed brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • ½ tsp smoked paprika
  • ¼ cup water as needed.

To Serve

  • 6 hamburger buns
  • butter for toasting optional
  • sliced pickles optional
  • sliced cheddar cheese optional
  • coleslaw optional.

INSTRUCTIONS

Cook Filling

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat
  • add onion and bell pepper and cook until softened
  • add garlic and cook briefly until fragrant
  • add ground beef and cook breaking up until no longer pink then drain excess fat if needed
  • season with salt and pepper then stir in tomato sauce ketchup tomato paste Worcestershire brown sugar mustard vinegar chili powder and paprika
  • simmer on low stirring occasionally until thickened and glossy adding a splash of water if too thick.

Assemble

  • Toast buns if desired
  • spoon hot sloppy joe mixture onto bottom buns
  • add pickles cheese or coleslaw if using and close with top buns then serve immediately.

Notes

1. Use ground turkey or chicken as a lean swap and add 1 tbsp extra oil for richness; Replace brown sugar with 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup; Make it spicier with hot sauce or 0.25 tsp cayenne; Sauce keeps 4 days refrigerated and freezes up to 3 months; If serving kids reduce chili powder and add extra ketchup
