Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Brownies

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Brownies are my go-to when I want a fudgy cocoa brownie but with that extra creamy peanut butter swirl on top. They’re rich, a little messy in the best way, and they slice into neat bars once they’re fully cooled.

This version stays soft and chewy with plenty of melty chocolate chips, and the peanut butter ripple gives you little pockets of sweet-salty flavor. I like cocoa brownies like this because they taste deeply chocolatey without needing fancy ingredients.

These are especially good on a cookie tray, for a holiday platter, or anytime you need an easy dessert bar that looks a little special. I’ll often serve them with coffee, or just keep them on the counter for quick slices through the weekend.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

One-bowl brownie feel: The batter is straightforward and forgiving, and you don’t need any mixers. It’s the kind of recipe you can make on a weeknight.

Fudgy centers: Cocoa brownies can go dry fast, and I like how this one stays dense and moist in the middle when you pull it at the right time.

Peanut butter swirl: The swirl bakes up creamy and a little crackly on top, so you get peanut butter in most bites without making the whole pan taste like peanut butter.

Chocolate chips in every slice: The chips melt into the brownie and give you those little soft pockets of chocolate. Semisweet is my default, but darker chocolate works too.

Easy to slice and serve: Once they’ve cooled, they cut cleanly into bars that travel well. I like them for parties and bake sales because they’re low fuss.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Brownie batter

  • Unsalted butter: Melted butter keeps the batter simple and gives you that classic dense brownie texture. Let it cool a bit so it doesn’t scramble the eggs.

  • Granulated sugar: This brings the crispier top and that shiny brownie finish. I wouldn’t cut it too much or the texture changes.
  • Light brown sugar: A little brown sugar makes the brownies chewier and adds a light caramel note. Dark brown sugar works too if that’s what you have.
  • Eggs: Room-temp eggs mix in smoother and help the brownies set without getting cakey. If your eggs are cold, just let them sit in warm water for a few minutes.
  • Vanilla extract: Don’t skip it. It makes the cocoa taste rounder and less flat.
  • All-purpose flour: I use regular flour here. Measure it lightly so the brownies don’t turn dry.
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder: This is the main chocolate flavor, so use one you like. Natural cocoa works great.
  • Fine salt: Salt is what keeps these from tasting one-note sweet, especially with the chips and peanut butter on top.

  • Baking powder: Just a small amount helps the edges set while the center stays dense. Too much will push the brownies toward cakey.
  • Semisweet chocolate chips: Semisweet is my go-to here. You can swap in dark chocolate chunks if you want bigger melty pockets.

Peanut butter swirl

  • Creamy peanut butter: The regular creamy jar kind is easiest for a smooth swirl. Natural peanut butter can work, but it needs to be well stirred and on the thicker side.
  • Powdered sugar: This sweetens the swirl and helps it set into a soft, creamy ribbon instead of disappearing into the batter.
  • Melted butter: A little butter loosens the peanut butter so it’s easier to swirl. It also helps the top stay glossy.
  • Vanilla extract: A small splash makes the swirl taste more like a real filling and less like straight peanut butter.
  • Salt: Just a pinch sharpens the peanut flavor. If your peanut butter is very salty, you can go lighter.

Recipe Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Heat the oven to 350°F. Line an 8-inch square pan with parchment paper, then lightly grease the parchment and sides.
  2. Mix the sugars: In a medium bowl, whisk the melted butter with the granulated sugar and brown sugar until glossy and well blended.
  3. Add the eggs: Whisk in the eggs and vanilla until the mixture looks smooth and slightly thickened.
  4. Add the dry ingredients: Add the flour, cocoa powder, salt, and baking powder. Fold just until you no longer see dry streaks.
  5. Add the chocolate chips: Fold in the chocolate chips, keeping the batter thick and evenly mixed.
  6. Mix the peanut butter swirl: Stir the peanut butter, powdered sugar, melted butter, vanilla, and a pinch of salt until smooth and pourable.
  7. Swirl: Spread the brownie batter evenly in the pan. Dollop the peanut butter mixture over the top, then drag a knife through the dollops to create swirls without overmixing.

  8. Bake: Bake for 28 to 32 minutes, until the edges are set and a toothpick inserted near the center comes out with moist crumbs.
  9. Cool: Cool in the pan for at least 60 minutes. Lift out using the parchment, then slice into bars.

Some of my tips!

This is the part that really makes a difference. If you only read one section, make it this one because this is where I share the little trick that helps the recipe turn out so well.

Recipe Tips & Tricks

Don’t overmix once the flour goes in. Fold just until the last dry streak disappears. Overmixing makes brownies tougher and less fudgy.

Use an 8-inch pan for thicker bars. If you switch to a 9×9-inch pan, the brownies will be thinner and they’ll bake faster. Start checking around 22 minutes.

Pull them when the toothpick has moist crumbs. If the toothpick comes out clean, they’re usually on the dry side. A few moist crumbs is what you want.

Keep the peanut butter swirl thick and controlled. If your peanut butter is very runny, the swirl can spread too much and disappear. I’d use a thicker peanut butter or chill the swirl mixture briefly.

Cool fully before slicing. These set as they cool, and the slices get much cleaner. If you cut too early, the center will stick to the knife and crumble.

Make some touches!

There are plenty of easy ways to serve this depending on the occasion. Keep it simple, or add a few small touches to make it feel a little more special.

Serving Suggestions

  • Milk: A cold glass of milk is classic with these, especially if you bake them a little under for a softer center. Chocolate milk is also fair game.
  • Coffee or espresso: The cocoa and peanut butter combo is really good with black coffee. I usually do a latte if I’m serving them after dinner.
  • Ice cream: Serve a square with vanilla ice cream on the side. A little chocolate sauce on top is nice, but honestly the brownies don’t need much.
  • Fruit: Fresh strawberries or raspberries are great with a rich brownie like this. I like to add a small handful on the plate.

Save it for later

This section covers how to store leftovers and what parts of the recipe you can prepare ahead of time.

Storage and Make Ahead

Store leftovers airtight for up to 4 days. I usually keep them at room temperature if my kitchen is cool, but the fridge is fine too if it’s warm out.

If you refrigerate them, the brownies will firm up quite a bit. Let a slice sit out for 10 to 15 minutes, or warm it briefly so the chips soften again.

If you want them to last longer, freeze sliced brownies for up to 2 months. Wrap them well, then thaw at room temperature or in the fridge overnight.

A few quick answers

This section covers a few extra details that may help before you head to the recipe card.

Recipe FAQs

How do I know when these brownies are done?

Look for set edges and a slightly softer-looking center. A toothpick near the center should come out with moist crumbs, not wet batter.

Can I use natural peanut butter for the swirl?

You can, but it needs to be well stirred and fairly thick. If it’s oily and loose, the swirl tends to spread too much and gets lost in the brownie top.

Can I swap the chocolate chips for something else?

Yes. Dark chocolate chunks work well, and chopped peanuts are great if you want crunch (about a half cup is plenty).

Why did my brownies come out dry?

Dry brownies are usually from baking a little too long or measuring flour too heavily. Start checking a few minutes early, and scoop flour lightly into the measuring cup instead of packing it in.
