Strawberry Trifle Salad is my kind of no-bake dessert when I want something cold and creamy with plenty of fresh fruit. It’s layered with cake cubes, juicy strawberries, and a vanilla cream that tastes like a cross between cheesecake and pudding.
I really like this version because the angel food cake stays light and the strawberries get just a little syrupy from the lemon and sugar. The cream layer is soft, fluffy, and not fussy, and it spreads easily even if you’re using a 9×13 dish instead of a trifle bowl.
For me, this is especially good for summer gatherings, potlucks, and holidays when the table already has enough baked desserts. It’s also a nice one to make when strawberries are sweet and cheap.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe
No-bake: No oven, no cooling time, no big wait. You just chill it so the layers can set up a bit.
Light and creamy: The vanilla pudding + cream cheese combo gives you a creamy filling that’s still airy once the whipped topping is folded in.
Great for a crowd: It makes a big dish and slices/scoops easily for serving. I like it for parties because it’s simple to portion.
Make-ahead friendly: This holds up well in the fridge for several hours, which takes pressure off right before you’re ready to serve.
Easy to customize: You can swap the cake, mix in other berries, or top with cookie crumbs when you want a little crunch.
Ingredients You’ll Need
Fruit
- Fresh strawberries: Fresh is best here since they’re the main flavor. I hull them first, then slice—thin slices give you nicer layers.
- Lemon juice: This wakes up the strawberries and keeps the flavor from tasting flat. Bottled works, but fresh is nicer if you have it.
- Granulated sugar: Just enough to pull some juice out of the berries and make that light syrup for the cake layer.
Cake Layer
- Angel food cake cubes (or pound cake cubes): Angel food keeps it lighter, pound cake makes it richer. Store-bought works totally fine, and I actually prefer it for speed.
Cream Layer
- Instant vanilla pudding mix: Make sure it’s instant, not cook-and-serve. This is what helps the cream layer hold its shape.
- Cold milk: Cold milk helps the pudding set quickly. I don’t suggest swapping to warm milk here.
- Cream cheese: Let it soften so it beats smooth with no lumps. Full-fat is my pick, but you can use reduced-fat if that’s what you keep around.
- Powdered sugar: This sweetens the cream cheese without any graininess. It also blends fast.
- Vanilla extract: It makes the filling taste more like vanilla cream instead of plain pudding. Real vanilla is great, but any vanilla you like is fine.
- Whipped topping: Thawed is key so it folds in easily. This keeps the filling fluffy and light.
Garnish
- Extra sliced strawberries: I add them right before serving so they look fresh and don’t weep too much.
- Crushed vanilla wafers (optional): This is a nice little crunchy finish. I only add it at the end so it doesn’t go soft.
- Fresh mint (optional): Not necessary, but it looks pretty and adds a clean pop on top.

Recipe Instructions
- Prep the strawberries: Toss the sliced strawberries with lemon juice and granulated sugar. Let them stand for about 10 minutes so they release some juices.
- Whisk the pudding: In a medium bowl, whisk the instant vanilla pudding mix with cold milk until thickened, about 2 minutes.
- Beat the cream cheese: In a separate bowl, beat the softened cream cheese with powdered sugar and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Mix the filling: Add the prepared pudding to the cream cheese mixture and mix until fully combined and smooth.
- Fold in the whipped topping: Fold in the thawed whipped topping until the cream layer is fluffy and evenly mixed.
- Layer the cake: Add a layer of cake cubes to the bottom of a trifle bowl or a 9×13-inch dish.
- Add strawberries: Spoon on a layer of strawberries, including some of the juices.
- Spread the cream: Add a layer of the vanilla cream and spread it out to the edges.
- Repeat the layers: Repeat the layers until everything is used up, ending with a layer of cream on top.
- Chill: Cover and chill for at least 1 hour before serving so it scoops neatly.
- Garnish and serve: Top with extra sliced strawberries and optional crushed vanilla wafers (and mint) right before serving.

Some of my tips!
This is the part that really makes a difference. If you only read one section, make it this one because this is where I share the little trick that helps the recipe turn out so well.
Recipe Tips & Tricks
Use really soft cream cheese. If it’s still cool in the middle, you’ll fight little lumps. Let it sit out long enough to feel spreadable, then beat it before adding anything else.
Let the strawberries get juicy first. That short rest with sugar and lemon makes a difference. The cake soaks up some of that juice and tastes more like a trifle and less like plain cake cubes.
Keep the cake cubes bite-sized. Big chunks make it hard to scoop clean servings. I aim for pieces around 1 inch so the layers stay neat.
Don’t rush the chill time. An hour is usually enough, but longer is fine if you want firmer slices. The pudding layer thickens more as it sits.
Add crunchy toppings at the end. Vanilla wafer crumbs are great, but they go soft fast. Sprinkle them on right before serving.
Make some touches!
There are plenty of easy ways to serve this depending on the occasion. Keep it simple, or add a few small touches to make it feel a little more special.
Serving Suggestions
- Extra berries: Put a bowl of sliced strawberries (or mixed berries) on the table so people can add more on top. It’s an easy way to make it look a little fresher.
- Cookies on the side: If you’re serving this at a party, a simple cookie like shortbread or vanilla wafers works well with it. People like having something to nibble with the dessert.
- Cold drinks: I like this with iced tea or lemonade, especially in summer. Anything light and cold fits the dessert.
- Simple garnish: A little mint on top looks nice, but even just a few strawberry slices arranged in the center does the job. Keep it simple.
Save it for later
This section covers how to store leftovers and what parts of the recipe you can prepare ahead of time.
Storage and Make Ahead
Store leftovers covered in the fridge for up to 3 days. The cake will soften more as it sits, but it’s still very good.
You can assemble it up to 12 hours ahead and keep it covered in the fridge. I like doing that when I’m bringing it somewhere, since it’s one less thing to deal with later.
If you’re using vanilla wafer crumbs or any crunchy topping, add it right before serving. Otherwise it turns soft pretty quickly in the fridge.
I don’t usually freeze this one. The strawberries and the creamy layer tend to thaw a little watery and the texture isn’t the same.

A few quick answers
This section covers a few extra details that may help before you head to the recipe card.
Recipe FAQs
Can I use pound cake instead of angel food cake?
Yes. Pound cake makes the trifle a little richer and denser, which a lot of people prefer. Angel food is lighter and soaks up the strawberry juices quickly.
Can I use homemade whipped cream instead of whipped topping?
You can. Whip 2 cups heavy cream with 1/4 cup powdered sugar until you get medium-stiff peaks, then fold it in the same way. Homemade whipped cream tastes great, but the trifle may soften a bit faster than when you use whipped topping.
Can I swap in other berries?
Definitely. Blueberries work well, and mixed berries are great too—just keep some strawberries in the mix so you still get that classic flavor and color. If you add raspberries, be gentle so they don’t break down too much.
Why is my cream layer a little runny?
Usually it’s because the pudding didn’t thicken enough before mixing, or the whipped topping was too warm when it got folded in. Make sure the milk is cold, whisk the pudding until it’s clearly thick, and chill the finished trifle long enough to set.
