Peanut Butter Oreo Dessert

Peanut Butter Oreo Dessert is my kind of no-bake treat: a buttery Oreo crust, a creamy peanut butter cheesecake layer, and a thick chocolate pudding top. It eats like a sliceable, cold dessert bar, and it’s rich in that familiar peanut butter-and-chocolate way.

I like this version because the middle layer stays fluffy and light instead of dense, and the pudding layer sets up just enough to cut cleanly. The crushed Oreos on top keep it simple, and I think it looks nicer than a fussy garnish.

This is one of my favorite desserts for potlucks and holiday weekends because it holds up well in the fridge and slices like a dream once it’s chilled. I usually serve it straight from the fridge with coffee or cold milk.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

No-bake win: No oven, no water bath, no fuss. It’s the kind of dessert I make when I want something reliable and cold from the fridge.

That peanut butter layer: It’s creamy and a little tangy from the cream cheese, with enough peanut butter flavor to actually taste it.

Classic flavors: Chocolate pudding and Oreos just work, and peanut butter makes it feel a little more special than the usual pudding dessert.

Easy to slice: Once it’s chilled, you can cut neat squares for serving. I like it best the next day when the layers have really set.

Flexible toppings: You can keep it simple with Oreos, or go heavier with peanut butter cups and a drizzle of chocolate syrup.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Oreo Crust

  • Oreo cookies: I use regular Oreos (not Double Stuf) so the crust holds together and doesn’t get too sweet. Crush them pretty fine so the base presses in firmly.
  • Unsalted butter: Melted butter is what binds the crumbs, so don’t skimp here. If your butter is hot, let it cool for a minute so it doesn’t get greasy.

  • Granulated sugar: Totally optional. I’ll add it if the Oreos I have are a little stale or I want a slightly crunchier crust.

Peanut Butter Cream Layer

  • Cream cheese: Full-fat gives the best texture, but reduced-fat works if that’s what you keep around. Make sure it’s softened so you don’t end up with lumps.
  • Creamy peanut butter: Regular shelf-stable peanut butter is easiest and gives the smoothest layer. Natural peanut butter can work, but it tends to loosen the texture if it’s very oily.
  • Powdered sugar: This sweetens and also helps the layer hold its shape. If it’s clumpy, sift it or break it up before mixing.
  • Whipped topping: This is what makes the peanut butter layer fluffy and light. Thaw it in the fridge so it folds in easily.
  • Milk: I only use a splash if the mixture feels too thick to spread. Different brands of peanut butter can change the texture a lot.

Chocolate Pudding Layer

  • Instant chocolate pudding mix: Instant is important here (not cook-and-serve). Chocolate fudge pudding is a great swap if you want it a little richer.

  • Cold milk: Cold milk helps the pudding thicken fast. Whole milk sets the nicest, but 2% works too.

Topping

  • Whipped topping: This makes a clean, easy top layer that spreads smoothly. I like to keep the edges neat so the layers show when you slice.
  • Oreo cookies: Roughly crushed is best for the topping so you get some bigger crunchy bits. I usually crush them right before sprinkling so they stay crisp.
  • Mini peanut butter cups: Optional, but really good if you want a little extra texture on top. Chop them small so the slices don’t fall apart.
  • Chocolate syrup: Also optional, but it’s an easy finish if you’re serving this at a party. A light drizzle is plenty.

Recipe Instructions

  1. Mix the crust: Stir the Oreo crumbs with melted butter and the sugar (if using) until the crumbs look evenly moistened.
  2. Press the crust: Press the mixture firmly into the bottom of a 9×13 inch dish. Chill for about 10 minutes so it firms up.

  3. Beat the cream cheese: Beat the softened cream cheese until smooth and creamy, scraping down the bowl as needed.
  4. Add peanut butter: Beat in the peanut butter and powdered sugar until fluffy and well mixed.
  5. Fold in whipped topping: Fold in the whipped topping until no streaks remain. If it feels too thick to spread, mix in a little milk.
  6. Spread the peanut butter layer: Spread the peanut butter mixture evenly over the chilled crust, pushing it to the corners.
  7. Mix the pudding: Whisk the instant pudding mix with cold milk for about 2 minutes, until thickened.
  8. Add the pudding layer: Spread the pudding evenly over the peanut butter layer, then chill about 5 minutes so it sets slightly.
  9. Top with whipped topping: Spread the remaining whipped topping over the pudding layer.

  10. Add the toppings: Sprinkle crushed Oreos over the top and add chopped mini peanut butter cups and/or a drizzle of chocolate syrup if you want.
  11. Chill: Cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours, or overnight, before slicing and serving.

Some of my tips!

This is the part that really makes a difference. If you only read one section, make it this one because this is where I share the little trick that helps the recipe turn out so well.

Recipe Tips & Tricks

Crush the crust crumbs pretty fine. Fine crumbs pack down tighter and slice cleaner later. Bigger chunks can make the crust a little crumbly when you cut.

Make sure the cream cheese is fully softened. If it’s still cool in the center, you’ll fight lumps the whole time. I usually leave it out long enough that it dents easily when I press a finger into it.

Use a small splash of milk only if you need it. Some peanut butters make a thicker mixture than others, and that’s when milk helps. Add a little at a time so the layer doesn’t turn loose.

Let the pudding thicken before you spread it. Give it the full whisk time so it’s not runny. It should look like soft-set pudding before it goes on the dessert.

Chill overnight for the cleanest slices. It’s easier to cut when the layers are cold and firm. Wipe your knife between cuts if you want really neat squares.

Make some touches!

There are plenty of easy ways to serve this depending on the occasion. Keep it simple, or add a few small touches to make it feel a little more special.

Serving Suggestions

  • Milk: A cold glass of milk is classic with this one. It’s especially nice if you went heavy on the crushed Oreos on top.
  • Coffee: I like this with plain black coffee or a latte. The bitterness is a nice break from the rich peanut butter and chocolate.
  • Fresh berries: Strawberries or raspberries on the side are simple and look good on the plate. I don’t mix them into the dessert, just serve them alongside.
  • Extra drizzle: Add a small drizzle of chocolate syrup (or even warmed peanut butter) right before serving. It makes the slices look finished without much effort.

Save it for later

This section covers how to store leftovers and what parts of the recipe you can prepare ahead of time.

Storage and Make Ahead

Store leftovers covered in the fridge for up to 4 days. The crust softens a bit over time, but it still tastes great.

You can make this recipe ahead the day before you need it. I actually prefer it after an overnight chill because it slices much more cleanly.

If you want them to last longer, you can freeze individual portions in an airtight container. Thaw in the fridge overnight before serving.

A few quick answers

This section covers a few extra details that may help before you head to the recipe card.

Recipe FAQs

Can I use chocolate fudge pudding instead of regular chocolate?

Yes. Chocolate fudge pudding mix works really well here and makes the chocolate layer a little richer. Use it the exact same way as regular instant chocolate pudding.

Can I swap some Oreos for peanut butter sandwich cookies?

You can, and it’s a nice change if you want more peanut flavor without adding more peanut butter. I like swapping just part of the Oreos so the crust still tastes like the classic cookie.

Why is my peanut butter layer too thick to spread?

This usually happens if the cream cheese is still cool or if your peanut butter is on the thicker side. Let the mixture sit for a few minutes, then add a small splash of milk and stir again.

How do I get cleaner slices?

Chill it overnight, then cut with a long knife and wipe it between cuts. It also helps to press the crust firmly and keep the layers as even as you can when spreading.

Can I use homemade whipped cream instead of whipped topping?

You can, but the dessert won’t hold its shape quite as long. If you go that route, use a stabilized whipped cream or plan to serve it the same day.
